2014 Programme of events


21 Jan - Hodsock Priory - renowned for snowdrops. An insight on life at Hodsock by George Buchanan, its characters, gardens and particularly snowdrops.
18 Feb - A suburban garden throughout the year. 'The talk features the Speaker's half acre garden, its reclamation and the plants that provide interest and colour throughout the year – Mike Davey
18 March -Gardens, gardening’s, gardeners lie at the heart of the National garden scheme. Chris Neill shares some of the highlights. 
15 April - Bring a dry sample of your soil for our practical session on pH soil analysis. 
20 May - Join us on a visit and guided tour with owner Robert Vernon of award winning Bluebell Nursery and Arboretum in Ashby de la Zouch. Specialising in rare and unusual trees. At 6.00 p.m. the coach leaves the long stay car park at Southwell Leisure Centre.
June - Date TBC Opera and Ditties in the garden. Southwell Open Gardens
17 June - Jeff Bates lecture at the W.I - Gardening at Windsor Castle gardens.
24th June - Visit to Hodsock Priory , Tour by George Buchanan. Meeting there for 6.30 p.m.
15 July - Garden Visit. - Old Vicarage, Halam. Cost of entry is £6.00, which includes a fabulous garden, refreshments and cake.
19th July - Southwell Opera in the garden. Including Local mezzo- soprano Emily Mowbray. A selection of arias and ensembles from Operas through history, with a few well known numbers to please everyone. Picnics from 6 pm for 7.30 . Tickets from Beckets electrical. 20 July - Southwell Open Gardens. 1 - 5 p.m. Six local gardens. To Include:- Burgage paddock, Burgage Manor, Flower Pod, 32 Easthorpe, Brackenhurst Walled garden and Clyde House for pimms, plant stall & cream teas. Click here to view the poster.
August 16 & 17 - Annual jolly trip to Norfolk – East Ruston and Houghton Hall.
16 Sept - Lawn is made of many fine leaved varieties. Do you know your bents and Fescues? with Mark Oxenbury. 
21 Oct - Growing for gold. Compost making with Gill Matheson
18 Nov - Alastair, our member extraordinaire, is going to advise and lead us on soft and hard wood cuttings.
16 Dec - Christmas Fuddle with mincepies and mulled wine.

20 Jan - ‘An anthology of women gardeners in history'. Talk by Helen Sills.
17 Feb - ‘Greenhouse Fever’. Talk by Johnathan Wild.
17 March -‘The Cutting Garden.’ Rachel Petheram specializes in English grown flowers at Doddington Hall in Lincolnshire. She is passionate about natural seasonal flowers produced in a sustainable way.
21 April (click here for poster) - Professor  Nigel Dunnett designed those incredible flower meadows we saw in the Olympic Park in 2012 and has created similar huge scale planting in many of our UK inner cities. Lecture about this and Rain Gardens how we can all design into our gardens Flood Mitigation methods.  The Minster school,  Southwell 7.30 for 8 pm. 19 May Garden Mystery tour. Meet on the Burgage by the War memorial at 7.30 please.
31 May - Southwell Open gardens. 1-5 pm Church Street and Easthorpians.
June - Southwell Open Gardens.
13 June Opera in the Garden . 23 Westgate, Southwell. Picnic in the garden from 6.30pm opera from 7.30pm.
16 June - Visit to Hill Holt Wood, Norton Disney, Lincs. LN6 9JP. A woodland working with the local community to create a better environment.
21 July - Visit to The Secret Garden, Wollaton Hall and Deer Park, Wollaton, Nottingham NG8 2AE. Nottingham Hardy Plant Society Botanical garden. 7pm £4
August - Garden Club Trip to gardens in other counties!
15 Sept - Vegetables, speaker to be arranged, and vegetable competition.
20 Oct - Containers, 'Winter through to late spring ' Talk by our esteemed former charlady, Chrissie Dale.
17 Nov - AGM and Garden Question Time.
15 Dec - Quiz and fuddle.

Southwell Gardening Club meet on the third Tuesday of every month except August at the WI Hall, Sheppards Row, Southwell, Nottinghamshire, NG25 0AB.
